Donating to Faversham Almshouses

Almshouses have been around for over 1,000 years and represent the oldest form of low-cost community housing for local people in need in the UK.

Why your Support Matters

While Almshouses carry great historical significance, they also come with the challenges of maintenance and repair. Repairing the main roof and the tiled walkways are just some of the challenges for which the Charity requires funding.

Your generous gift will enable us to continue that legacy, supporting our vibrant community, ensuring residents have a secure and dignified place to call home.

What our Almshouses offer

The Faversham Almshouses, administered by Faversham Municipal Charities, have existed at their present-day site in South Road since 1863, although their origins date back much farther to 1614.

Today, the Almshouses consist of 69 units, most of them in the splendid 1863 building, the largest, and arguably the finest, scheme of its kind in Kent. The site has studio and one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. They provide affordable housing for those in need and the opportunity to live independent lives.

We actively encourage the independence of our residents, but have Scheme Managers who conduct a regular well-being check and provide advice on sources of additional support. We do not provide personal care or nursing care, meals, transport or help with cleaning. All our flats are connected to a control centre for emergencies including out of hours.

The Almshouses are situated in beautiful landscaped grounds, which has plenty of outdoor seating for residents to use. Our Community Room is where residents meet for regular and one-off events such as coffee morning and special celebrations. There is a regular monthly service in the Chapel and occasional concerts. All residents have access to our onsite laundry facilities, with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Applicants must have lived in the town of Faversham continuously for at least 5 years immediately preceding application.
This does not include outlying villages eg. Oare and Graveney.
