  • What our Almshouses offer

The Faversham Almshouses, administered by Faversham Municipal Charities, have existed at their present-day site in South Road since 1863, although their origins date back much farther to 1614.

Today, the Almshouses consist of 69 units, most of them in the splendid 1863 building, the largest, and arguably the finest, scheme of its kind in Kent. The site has bedsits and one-bedroom and two-bedroom units. They provide affordable housing for those in need and the opportunity to live independent lives.

We actively encourage the independence of our residents, but have Scheme Managers who conduct a regular well-being check and provide advice on sources of additional support. We do not provide personal care or nursing care, meals, transport or help with cleaning. All our flats are connected to a control centre for emergencies including out of hours.

The Almshouses are situated in beautiful landscaped grounds, which has plenty of outdoor seating for residents to use. Our Community Room is where residents meet for regular and one-off events such as coffee morning and special celebrations. There is a regular monthly service in the Chapel and occasional concerts. All residents have access to our onsite laundry facilities, with a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Applicants must have lived in the town of Faversham continuously for at least 5 years immediately preceding application.
This does not include outlying villages eg. Oare and Graveney.

    Grants from FMC

As well as providing almshouse accommodation,
the Trustees of Faversham Municipal Charities are permitted to make grants for certain charitable objects within FMC’s area of benefit, which is the town of Faversham.

The objects that may be supported are education, relief in need, the Recreation Ground and heritage.

The support that can be given is necessarily limited by income each year.

The FMC branches and linked heritage charity that fulfil our charitable objects are:

    • Relief in Need Branch: to relieve poverty by providing grants and payments to organisations or individuals resident in Faversham.
    • Recreation Branch: to provide a recreation ground in Faversham.
    • The Faversham Heritage Fund and Henry Hatch Charity: for the preservation and improvement of historic buildings, the distinctive character of the townscape, landscape and the creek and the preservation of historic artefacts, regalia and ceremonials in Faversham.

For further details and an application form, please contact us.

    Donating

Keeping the historic Grade II listed building in good condition and fit for the future is an ongoing challenge, particularly with regard to financing. Remodelling of the bedsits, repair of the tiled walkways and a new heating and lighting system for the chapel are just some of the challenges for which the Charity requires funding.

If you would like to give a donation towards the upkeep of the building or would like further information please contact the Clerk to the Trustees.
